 Matt Beasley

August 10 · The entire San Jose Jazz SummerFest crowd exploded up in appreciation at the Adobe Silicon Valley Stage after saxophonist Richard Howell finished A Love Supreme. Wow.

Matt Beasley Richard Howell Quintet It’s an interesting story how this performance came to be but saxophonists Kristen Strom and Oscar Pangilinan were instrumental in guiding me in your direction. Thank you for your beautiful, inspirational performance. I’m still feeling the good vibes.

Ben Torres No joke: this was a spiritual journey... and if you judge by DOUBLE standing ovations, more than a few people reached nirvana.

Marta Ulvaeus Brilliant performance. Beautiful energy in the room. Thank you.

Fernando DeSanjines Arellano The concert was really beautiful I enjoyed very much! Thank you !

Karen Sudjian Your performance was truly uplifting and the spiritual highlight of the weekend.

Hans Saier If you missed this show, encourage Richard to do it over and over. He had almost 300 in the audience, singing in unison. You could feel the love, and that’s no joke. This is what the world needs. Simply Beautiful.

Regis KinRe Molina ASHEEE!!!!

Charles Black √ Richard Howell, while a commanding presence on stage, is as humble and modest when you speak with him. And this personal warmth and direct approach is manifest in that he always brings out the very best in his supporting musicians. Blessings abound!

Jeanie Dooha for sure one of the highlights of my musical year .... transported, ascended, connected community ... much gratitude ..

The highlight of Saturday’s 2019 San Jose Jazz Festival was Richard Howell Quintet’s A Love Supreme. They were in a Quartet for this show, and featured a mini set of John Coltrane. From the first note of A Love Supreme, It was obvious Howell was well-versed in Coltrane. What stood me on ear was his large, soul-penetrating tone. Richard was equal parts Shaman and Sax man, tantalizing the audience with proving and long tones that drove the music deep. He literally transported us to the time of Coltrane... and then went BEYOND. Mind sufficiently blown. The rhythm section of bassist Nick Panoutsos, pianist Ian McArdle, and his own son as drummer, Ele Howell, equally elevated the music with dazzling solos and adept handling of the music. After Love Supreme was a standing ovation. Then Richard performed his own song and got the entire audience singing along “We are all connected” it was moving and brought tears to our eyes. Last, My Favorite Things left everyone in sheer delight. If this was the only show, the fest was worth the price of admission, of course there were other great acts such as @Sammy Miller and the Congregation, Fred Hersch performed a piano jazz trio, and Kim Nalley with James Carter did not disappoint! We opened the day with Charlie Hunter. We ended with Pink Martini on the main stage and that was like a trip to Paris. You really can’t go wrong with all the music we took in for one day of pure blissful pre-birthday celebration. Thank you to all the team at San Jose Jazzand Matt Beasley! 😎❤️🙏🎷🎵

Marta Ulvaeus

I was so fortunate to have had the company of so many of my jazz radio family members this past week in San Jose.

I also was blessed with hearing so much brilliantly creative music!

You already know about Friday night, with Akira Tana & Otonowa as well as Marquis Hill Blacktet at Cafe Stritch.

Well, that was just the beginning.

Saturday: Charlie Hunter, Lucy Woodard & Doug Belote; Richard Howellplaying "A Love Supreme"; Arsenio Rodriguez Project; Fred Hersch; Gregory Porter; Kim Nalley Band with James Carter; and Ray Obiedo Group.

Sunday: Roberta Gambarini Quartet (with Tadataka Unno, Gerald Cannon, and Willie Jones III); Monty Alexander and the Harlem-Kingston Express...

And Elio Villafranca and Cinque closed out the festival so deeply...

Grateful for this powerful music, which brings love and positive energy to our world.

Anne Sajdera Completely transcendent
